At least one shopper is asking for more security in the wake of another shooting in our area. One occurred at a Hyattsville supermarket Monday morning.
“Wow, it’s a blessing he didn’t’ kill anybody. It’s real sad,” said a shopper, Joyce Jones.
While sources told WUSA9 it was a disgruntled employee, Prince George’s County Police actually did not identify the person right away.
Police can only confirm a suspect shot the front entrance of the Shoppers Food Warehouse on the 2400 block of Chillum Rd in Hyattsville, Md. It happened after 5 a.m. Monday, with customers like Joyce Jones, afterwards, shaking their heads.
“It’s very unfortunate because this store meets a lot of needs for the people of this area,” Jones said.
“I came to shoppers to get their custard filled donuts. They’re the best in the area,” said Ann Garrity who told WUSA9 the incident won’t stop her from coming here. However, that doesn’t mean it will not weigh heavily on her, especially after the violence in D.C. this weekend that killed a 16-year-old.
“It’s sad, all this violence. It seems each time you listen to the news, something has happened: a stabbing or shooting. And, I think we’d all be much better if we can learn to live without guns,” said Garrity who says she grew up around guns. She told WUSA9 her father was a hunter.
Jones prefers something else change.
“They might beef up security because it’s kind-of happening all over the place now. Hopefully they can do that,” Jones said noting a single security guard outside.
Everything opened for business as normal after. A Shopper’s manager will neither confirm nor deny what happened at the store and did not provide a cooperate spokesperson to contact.
Police did not say how many shots were fired. The suspect fled the scene right after.
