Several young kids hospitalized after ingesting an unknown substance

Kids under the age of 8 years old are recovering after a scary situation Tuesday.

HYATTSVILLE, Md. — Prince George’s County officials responded to a call about kids not waking up from their sleep at an apartment complex in Hyattsville on Edmonston Road on Tuesday just before 1:30 p.m.

Four kids were inside an apartment when the call first came in about children who were not waking up from their nap. When WUSA9 spoke with fire officials, they confirmed that the kids ingested an unknown substance. It is unclear when the kids took the substances or who found them.

All the kids are 8 years old and younger, the woman who spoke with WUSA9 said one of them is a 1-year-old. The children were taken to a nearby hospital.

Fire crews later told tell us, a fifth child was also transported to the hospital. The woman who is leasing the apartment said four kids and their mother currently rent a room from her. The leaseholder doesn't have any relation to the mother and her children renting the room.

The kids are still in the hospital being closely monitored as they work to recover from this.

There’s no clear description of what the substance is, WUSA9 asked Prince George’s County Fire and EMS for more information on that. They said the kids have serious injuries, but they are non-life threatening.
