SILVER SPRING, Md. — An occupied school bus crashed into a building in Silver Spring, Maryland Wednesday during the morning route to school.
According to a 7:24 a.m. tweet from Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services Public Information Officer Pete Piringer, the school bus crashed into the Montgomery Towers apartment, located on Silver Spring Avenue, nearby Piney Branch Road.
At the scene, responding officials learned that the bus struck the covered entrance area to the apartment complex. On the area that was hit, a warning sign was visible that reads: "Warning, low overhead clearance" in all capital letters, which accompanied the height that was allowed underneath - 9 feet and 6 inches. On average, most school buses across the country are 10 feet and 6 inches tall.
Piringer stated that there were no injuries due to the collision, but there is property damage to the building. Part of the building rubble could be seen on the top of the bus, as well as part of the ceiling seen on the front window of the bus. The frame of the overhead area was damaged. Some of the debris from the incident could be seen falling from it.
The cost of the damage that was caused has not been announced, but a building inspector was notified. It is unknown at this time what school the bus was going to, as well as the age ranges of the students on the bus. It is also unknown how many people were on the bus at the time.
