PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, Md. — Students in Prince George’s county are learning in a brand new way during Black History Month. We first told you about the mobile Sankofa museum back in September. Now it’s started visiting schools across the county.
Students are getting an up close and personal history lesson on wheels.
"It was cool like all the interactives and how you could scroll as if it was TikTok or flip the pages," said 5th grader Doryan Tapet.
"It’s very informative, it’s fun. It tells you about the past in a cool way," said another student, Modupe Samuel.
The Sankofa mobile museum visited the 5th graders at Glenarden Woods Elementary School. It’s the newest initiative from the Prince George’s County Department of Parks and Recreation, blending technology and history.
"It use[s] your face to move the screen around. I have never seen that technology before," said student Dylan Rojas.
Everyone included in the mobile museum is specifically part of the county’s history, but typically names you wouldn’t find in history books. The curriculum is made up of the following three parts: an open-ended discussion, virtual reality, and augmented reality. It is completely free.
Principal Brian Baudoin says introducing new material in a way students can understand helps keep them interested.
"We’re always looking for new technologies always using new technologies to help students stay engaged at home they’re using technology anyway they know it better than we do," Baudoin said.
Students say the lesson connected with them on a whole new level.
"I feel like it makes me more interested in the material because it’s more like a game play. It’s very interactive and fun," said Nadaya Osei-Ttu.
"It opens your mind to a new perspective of racism and segregation," said Modupe Samuel.
