BETHESDA, Md. — The WUSA9 team was at two locations at the crack of dawn on Saturday, collecting computers, paper files and other reusable items for "Recycle Day."
The papers piled up at the Westfield Montgomery in Bethesda and the Washington Gas Springfield Center in Springfield, Va., along with VHS players and clothes.
"My house is full of papers," one woman who participated in the recycle drive said. "I recycle to save my planet."
Cars lined up down the parking lots to dispose of old recyclable materials and also to meet the WUSA9 news team.
"I love your morning show, by the way," a recycler said. "I love Wisdom."
According to the Environmental Protection Agency, WUSA9 shredded and recycled 54,980 pounds of file material.
Below are some stats the EPA released about the resources saved in the drives in Virginia and Maryland on Saturday.
- 468 Trees
- 2241 Cubic Feet of landfill space
- 9,900 gallons of water
- 1,650 pounds of CO2 pollutants
- 10,450 gallons of oil
- 286,000 kilowatts of electricity
"Once I learned about this event, I just started stockpiling items -- And here we are," another recycler said.
