UPPER MARLBORO, Md. (WUSA9) – The Prince George's County police officer accused of assaulting a Suitland High School student was convicted Monday, officials said.

In Nov. 2013, Officer Pickard was working as a School Resource Officer at Suitland High School when he allegedly assaulted a student and then placed the student under arrest.

"We are pleased that Officer Pickard was found guilty in this case as it was quite disturbing, not only that he struck another individual without cause, but that he struck a child in a school building," said Prince George's County State's Attorney Angela Alsobrooks. "We often tell children that they must follow the rules and abide by the laws of our county and nation, and it must be clear that police officers are not exempt from those rules."
