SUITLAND, Md. — An elderly Maryland man died after a house fire in Suitland, Maryland, Tuesday night.
Firefighters were dispatched to a house fire in the 1800 block of Campbell Drive just before 7:30 p.m. Crews arrived to find a single-story home with a basement, with smoke showing and heavy fire inside the home, the Prince George's County Fire Department said in a tweet.
Responding firefighters were able to bring the fire under control quickly. During a search of the home, the fire department says firefighters found an adult man inside with serious, life-threatening injuries. He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead 4 hours later.
The man was identified by Prince George's County police as Gene Summers.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends," PGPD said in a statement.
A woman who got herself out of the house was also treated for minor injuries, and is expected to survive.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and a medical examiner will determine the cause of Summer's death.
Fire investigators estimate the damage to the home to be around $100,000.
