ODENTON, Md. (WUSA9) -- More than 250 birds were rescued from an alleged cockfighting operation in Anne Arundel County, according to authorities.
Anne Arundel County police arrested Ethan Samuel Harmon, 36, of Odenton in connection with the cockfighting operation. Harmon is being charged with possession with intent to use a gaff to be used on a gamecock (18 counts), possession with intent to use a sparring muff on a gamecock (4 counts), and possession with intent to use a cock for the purpose of fighting another animal cockfighting (67 counts).
Anne Arundel County animal control got a complaint about a house located at 1248 Patuxent Road in Odenton, being used for gamecocks. A search warrant was executed on June 8 at the home. Over 250 birds were rescued from the home, according to the Humane Society of the United States. Gamcocks, hens and chicks were all taken by animal control, police said.
"This inhumane activity has no place in Anne Arundel County, as it's not only barbaric and cruel, but it's often accompanied by other crimes including drug and weapons offenses. We appreciate the assistance and expertise of The Humane Society of the United States to help us root out this criminal activity in our community," said Anne Arundel County Police Chief Timothy Altomare.
In addition, paraphernalia related to cockfighting was found. Authorities do not believe the actual cockfighting was happening on the property. The animals were being bred on the property for cockfighting at other places, police said.
"These birds were bred to be fought to the death with sharp knives tied to their feet. Cockfighting is an inhumane blood sport that we are working hard to eradicate in Maryland and nationwide. We are thankful for the Anne Arundel County authorities' quick and efficient action to shut down this operation," said Janette Reever, deputy manager of animal fighting response for The HSUS.
The investigation is ongoing.
