Small plane crashes in Prince George's County

A small plane crashed in Prince George's County Thursday evening, according to a local fire department and Sky9 chopper footage of the scene.

A small plane crashed in Prince George's County Thursday evening, according to Prince George's County Police Department.

First responders are on the scene of the crash in a wooded area in Glenn Dale, Maryland. Police say the crash happened at 5:55 p.m.

When officials arrived at the scene, police say they found a Cessna Skyhawk aircraft in a wooded area near Fairview Vista Road near the airport.

The plane is owned by the Goddard Aircraft Club Inc in Greenbelt, Md.

Glenn Dale is an unincorporated community in the county.

The pilot has been identified as Michael Paul Pillsbury, 72, of Washington, D.C. He told police he was trying to land at Freeway Airport in Bowie upon his return from Ocean City, Md.

He also told police there was no lighting and he could not see the tree line as he was approaching the airport. The aircraft made contact with the tree line and overturned.

Maryland State Police say Phillsbury was alert and able to walk out of the woods. Police say he was taken to a local hospital.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
