Police seeking witnesses in deadly crash involving DC police officer

Officer Jamal Shaw, 27, was riding his motorcycle westbound along Piscataway Road when he was hit by a car; he passed away on Friday afternoon.

CLINTON, Md. (WUSA9) — A family was left devastated by the death of a 27-year-old DC police officer in a motorcycle collision with a car.

Officer Jamal Shaw was killed on Friday when a car abruptly cut him off, forcing the motorcycle he was riding to slide on its side. A car coming in the opposite direction then hit him.

The accident has broken hearts in his community.

His uncle, Tyrone Hunt, says Jamal joined the DC police force to do what he loved. "He wanted to help other people. He wanted to help the young juveniles because he came up with the understanding of how to treat people," said Hunt.

Police in Prince George's County are now actively working to identify the driver who caused a collision on April 6.

Police said Officer Jamal Shaw, 27, was riding his motorcycle to a friend's house westbound along Piscataway Road when a vehicle made an abrupt lane change, forcing Shaw to lay his bike down.

Shaw was then struck by another vehicle traveling in the opposite direction.

According to police, the driver who changed lanes in front of the victim did not remain on the scene.

Police said Shaw was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The driver of the striking car was not hurt and remained on the scene.

Hunt says he and the rest of Jamal's family just want closure and hope the other driver will come forward to tell their side of the story.

He also hopes Jamal will be remembered for his motivation, character and smile.

"I love you Jamal. I know you’re in good hands. We’re going to miss you. We’re going to keep you with you in our hearts, in our minds, in our soul for the rest of our lives," said Hunt.
