BALTIMORE — A man parked along the curb of Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI) and told police he had an explosive device in his car, prompting the shutdown of the terminal roadway Wednesday afternoon.
According to information posted to X, formerly called Twitter, the law enforcement investigation caused traffic approaching the airport to be held. Video captured by Sky9 showed cars backed up for miles in stand-still traffic. Additionally, the people who are already inside the terminal were advised to remain in place.
A security source told WUSA9 that the man parked his car and told police he had an explosive device. The bomb squad searched his vehicle and cleared the car. The man was arrested but there is no word on what charges he may face at this time.
Shortly afterward, traffic along the roadway slowly returned to normal.
The person who police say made the thread was later transported to a local hospital for mental health treatment.
Charges have yet to be filed in the incident.
"As a follow-up to this afternoon’s law enforcement incident, we want to reiterate airport operations returned to normal earlier this evening," airport officials said in a statement. "Thanks to our law enforcement partners for a quick and safe resolution. We appreciate the patience of passengers and airport visitors."
Anyone with information should contact the Maryland Transportation Authority Police at (410) 859-7042.
