BELTSVILLE, Md. — An early Friday morning crash has left a pedestrian dead in Beltsville, according to authorities.
Officers with the Prince George's County Police Department responded around 4:50 a.m. to Powder Mill Road, off of Cherry Hill Road and in the area of High Point High School, after a report of a collision involving a pedestrian. Once in the area, they found a woman in the roadway suffering from injuries due to the crash.
She was pronounced dead at the location. No information has been released about the identity of the victim, this includes her age, name, and where she is from. Police say it is too early in the investigation to say if she is a student or teacher at the nearby school.
The driver of the striking vehicle remained at the crash scene. Investigators are working to determine the cause of the collision.
Powder Mill Road was closed in both directions from Cherry Hill Road to Evans Trail for several hours due to the investigation. The road reopened to traffic around 7:45 a.m.
Neighbors in the area are raising concerns about traffic safety. Randi Ayala spoke to residents who say they've been complaining about people speeding along Powder Mill Rd.
"Where she was hit, there is a crosswalk there — but unlike this crosswalk here that has a light and a control — that one doesn’t, and we’ve actually been trying to tell them we need the flashers or just another light in general because people come down Powder Mill Road like it’s NASCAR 500," said a neighbor who only wanted to be identified as Marnica J. She lives in the neighborhood across from where the woman was hit and killed.
