Party in Brandywine shut down by authorities after over 600 people show up

Party promotors rented the pool from the homeowner and advertised the location on multiple social media platforms.

BRANDYWINE, Md. — A large party that had hundreds of people in attendance was shut down Saturday night in Brandywine, and sparked concerns for authorities.

Officers with the Charles County Sheriff's Office (CCSO) responded to Inheritance Drive at 7:30 p.m. after receiving a report of an exceptionally large party, traffic complaints, and disorderly behavior. Upon arrival, they found around 200 parked cars on the street and in yards throughout the neighborhood. It was determined that between 600-800 were trying to attend a pool party at a single family home.

Party promotors rented the pool from the homeowner and advertised the location on multiple social media platforms.

The promotors' security started to shut down the event after it became clear that there were too many people. Officers with the sheriff's office helped with traffic. As people were leaving, one person was arrested for an assault.

The sheriff's office says they know this is an ongoing nationwide issue and recognize the concerns related to promoters renting residential spaces in neighborhoods for large scale events. In addition, they say tackling the issue requires more than a law enforcement response, local and state legislation is also needed to help manage and regulate the use of these properties for promotors of large events.

CCSO is working with county officials in regards to this event as well as a future event which is being promoted, and they will continue working toward long-term solutions with local authorities and legislators.
