LUSBY, Maryland — An alert system for a Maryland nuclear power plant is going to be tested on Dec. 4 at noon, and may be heard by residents in parts of St. Mary's, Calvert and Dorchester counties.

With a little less than a week's notice, the St. Mary's County government announced Tuesday that there would be a scheduled test of the alert and notifcation sirens at the Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant at noon on Monday. The test will include a three-minute activation of all sirens with 10 miles of the plant.

"All citizens should be aware of this scheduled testing and relay the information to friends, family, and neighbors," said a spokesperson for the St. Mary's County government. "Knowing what to do before, during, and after an emergency is a critical part of being prepared and may make all the difference, when seconds count."

The testing is meant to check siren operation and to make sure the surrounding public is aware of what to do if they heard an unscheduled alert.

"If the sirens sound at any other time, residents should tune in to one of the local radio stations for information and instructions," the government spokesperson said.
