ROCKVILLE, Md. — A Montgomery County native is making 'herstory'. Helen Maroulis has become the first American woman to qualify for three Olympic games in wrestling.
She earned her spot on the U.S. Wrestling Team on Saturday and is now headed to Paris this summer to compete. Maroulis dominated former Olympian Jacarra Winchester in a best-of-three series.
Maroulis is a two-time Olympic medal winner as she has taken home bronze in Tokyo in 2020 and gold in Rio in 2016.
She is originally from Rockville, but now she wrestles and trains in Arizona. According to the Maryland State Archives, she began wrestling at the age of 8, and in early competition she wrestled mostly against males. In the male-dominated sport, she helped to change the landscape of the wrestling in Maryland. Her determination and love for the sport helped to transform many coaches' attitudes toward female wrestlers.
