PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, Md. — The Prince George’s Council is urging citizens to abstain from eating meat and consider available alternatives.
To encourage residents to try a different lifestyle, the county has adopted March 20 as “MeatOut Day”. In 1985, MeatOut began empowering thousands of people nationwide to explore the benefits of plant-based eating.
The County Council believes this change could aid in the overall improvement of residents’ health.
“We know vegetarian and vegan lifestyles aren’t for everyone,” said Council Chair Jolene Ivey. “This initiative is about encouraging people to eat less meat when possible and think about the health and environmental benefits of a more plant-based diet. Even eliminating meat just for one day can make a difference.”
Some health benefits of consuming less meat include:
- Helps prevent and reverse heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. Eating less meat can promote weight loss, increase energy, and promote a longer life
- Reduces air and water pollution
- Stop animal cruelty
“After a recent briefing by the Health Department, we know there are a lot of chronic illnesses in the county, and diet is very important in addressing that,” said District 1 Council Member Tom Dernoga. “MeatOut Day is meant to encourage people to try a plant-based diet, not that they need to go plant-based all day every day, but they should consider the health benefits.”
Prince George’s County now joins other Maryland counties such as Montgomery County and Takoma Park in the movement.
