Maryland State Police investigating inmate death at Allegany County prison

The Maryland State Police Homicide Unit was contacted by investigators to lead the investigation.

CUMBERLAND, Md. — Maryland State Police are investigating an inmate death that happened in an Allegany County prison Saturday afternoon.

The inmate, identified as 80-year-old Ralph Ruark, was serving time at the Western Correctional Institution in Cumberland. He was declared dead by EMS around 3:30 p.m., and was then taken to the Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore to determine the cause and manner of death.

About 40 minutes after his death, the Maryland State Police Homicide Unit was contacted by investigators to lead the investigation. Once the investigation is complete, the findings will be presented to the Allegany County State’s Attorney’s Office for review.

The investigation remains active and ongoing.
