PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, Md. — Police are reminding drivers to pay attention to motorcyclists as warmer weather marks the start of riding season.
This reminder to share the road safely comes after a deadly motorcycle crash Monday night in Prince George's County.
Around 7 p.m. on Monday, troopers responded to a crash on northbound Route 301 in the area of Leeland Road in Upper Marlboro.
Initial investigation shows a Suzuki motorcycle was traveling north on Route 301, when it struck the passenger side of a tractor-trailer truck making a U-turn.
Police claim the truck was attempting to make the U-turn from the southbound lanes into the northbound lanes on Route 301 when the crash occurred.
Personnel from the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration and Prince George’s County Fire/EMS Department responded to the scene to help.
The motorcycle rider, later identified as Bryan McKinley Hall, 49, of Upper Marlboro, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
Warmer weather marks the beginning of the riding season for motorcyclists.
Maryland State Police are reminding motorists to share the road safely and never engage in impaired, aggressive or distracted driving.
Tips on how to best share the road with motorcyclists:
- Check your blind spots, always.
- Be cautious when passing.
- Remember, motorcycles react more quickly than cars.
- Bad weather has more drastic effects on motorcycle riders.
- Riding at night can be treacherous for motorcyclists. Keep your distance and ensure your high-beams are turned off when approaching. Refrain from passing at night.
- Stay in your lane.
- Use your turn signal sooner than you normally would.
- Keep in mind, crashes are super common in intersections for motorcycles and automobiles alike.
- Watch for turning motorcycles.
- Take a second look when turning left.
