FREDERICK, Md. — There was a huge outpouring of community support at Thanksgiving Farms in Adamstown, Md. Saturday. That's the site of the now former 'Mad Science Brewing Company.' The brewery closed its doors Saturday night for good.
The decision to close the brewery came after the owner, Brian Roberts, was diagnosed with Stage 4 bone cancer over the summer. The cancer has not been responding to treatment.
Roberts and his family welcomed hundreds of friends and longtime patrons to the brewery one last time. People also stopped in to buy beer and clear the brewery's inventory. Brian's wife Louisa Roberts says there were already 200 cars lined up by 11 a.m. Saturday.
"It's the greatest form of love that could ever happen. It just means more to us than anything that could ever happen," she said.
Roberts says the extra time he would normally be spending at the brewery, will now be spent visiting some of his friends' breweries and going fishing with his kids.
Roberts says he is being optimistic with more planned cancer treatment and is waiting to see if he is eligible for any trials. He also tells WUSA9 a piece of advice he'd like to share is for people to get vaccinated against HPV, which he says is what caused his type of cancer.
"No sense of anybody else having to deal with this if three shots in the arm gets you away from this and protects you and your loved ones from this kind of cancer. Please go get vaccinated," said Brian Roberts.
