HYATTSVILLE, Md. — Police in Hyattsville arrested a man with nunchucks at Northwestern High School Thursday.

At around 12:10 p.m., a staff member at the school called Hyattsville Police to report a man on school property who appeared to be recording students on a phone near the football field. A school resource with officer and school security responded as the man began walking toward the front of the school, where they met him.

While speaking with him, they noticed a bulge under the man's clothing that appeared to be a weapon. When asked about it, he began backing away and the officer and security attempted to grab him, police said. That's when the man took out a pair of 10-inch nunchucks. The 48-year-old Chillum man began twirling the nunchucks and making threats.

The school resource officer drew his gun and told the man to drop the weapon. The man complied and dropped the nunchucks as back-up arrived to arrest him. He hit the officer and attempted to break away, police said. He was eventually taken to the ground and handcuffed.

Officers learned that the man, a parent of a student, had been filming activity on the football field because he was angry about students being out of class and unsupervised on the field. The man complained of back pain and was taken to the hospital for evaluation.

The man is being charged with Dangerous Weapon on School Property, Disorderly Conduct, 2nd Degree Assault, School Disruption and Failure to Obey a Reasonable and Lawful Order.

The incident was resolved before a lockdown could be initiated. Police said the incident highlights the importance of “see something, say something.”
