MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. — A man convicted of hitting and killing a married couple with a car while driving under the influence was sentenced to a decade in prison with all but eight years suspended Friday.
According to the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office, Davinder Singh will also be required to serve five years of supervised probation upon release and pay $2,000 in fines.

On November 8, 2022, Singh was driving a Toyota Prius along School Drive just before 7:30 a.m. when he hit 65-year-old Miguel Antonio Ortiz and his wife, 70-year-old Ana Margarita Ortiz, as they were crossing the street. The married couple from Gaithersburg were holding hands, crossing the street to vote at an elementary school polling place when they were struck and killed.
Singh was later arrested on Feb. 10 after returning from overseas.
He was convicted in July 2023 of Homicide by Motor Vehicle While Under the Influence of Alcohol, Driving While Under the Influence of Alcohol, and multiple related charges.
“The loss of Miguel and Ana Ortiz left a devastating void for their four adult children and multiple grandchildren. We express our deepest condolences to the grieving family. This case centers around public safety and we thank the judge for imposing a lengthy sentence, said State’s Attorney John McCarthy.
