Man hit, killed by car on I-270 while trying to put gas in his vehicle

Authorities say the driver of the Nissan involved in the crash stayed at the scene.

BETHESDA, Md. — A man is dead after being struck by a car on I-270 in Montgomery County early New Year's Day.

Troopers with the Maryland State Police responded to the area of northbound I-270, before Old Georgetown Road, in Bethesda just before 5 a.m. after a report of a two-vehicle crash involving a pedestrian. Through an initial investigation, they determined that the pedestrian was outside of their vehicle trying to put gas in their car when a Nissan Altima traveling north on I-270 hit them.

The man was taken to Suburban Hospital to be treated for his injuries where he later died.

He was identified as Caesar Adigwe Jr., 36, of Spotsylvania.

Authorities say the driver of the Nissan involved in the crash stayed at the scene.

The Maryland State Police Crash Team is leading the investigation. They will submit their findings to the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office who will decide whether charges should be filed.

No other injuries were reported as a result of the collision.

During the investigation, one lane was closed on the north side of I-270, with Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration helping with road closures.
