9-hour police standoff with barricaded man in Langley Park ends peacefully

Police responded to the neighborhood for a call of shots being fired.

LANGLEY PARK, Md. — A barricade situation happening in a neighborhood in Prince George's County ended peacefully on Friday morning with a man in custody, Prince George's County Police said.

Around 2:30 a.m., officers were dispatched to a call of shots fired at a home in the 8200 block of 17th Avenue in Langley Park.

When officers arrived, they saw family members of the alleged suspect outside the home ─ eight adults and four children.

Officers setup a perimeter around the home with the man barricaded inside, and nine hours later, he was taken into custody without incident.

“We believe the subject fired rounds outside and inside of the home," said Deputy Chief Tina Gomez with Prince George's County Police Department. "Once officers got here and we, with the great work of the men and women of the Prince George’s County Police Department, we were able to apprehend the subject without incident.”

A woman who lives nearby tells WUSA9 she was woken up by a commotion around six o'clock Friday morning. She says she heard police speaking to the suspect through a megaphone.

She also tells WUSA9 police used its megaphone on homes nearby, telling people to stay indoors. Police told everyone on the street to get to the lowest part of their homes.

She says many people couldn’t get to work Friday because of the shelter in place.

Merrimac Drive was closed between 14th Avenue and Keokee Street, and 14th Avenue was closed at Quebec Street.

There were no reported injuries. No other details have been released.
