Judge orders mental health evaluation on Bowie teen who admitted to police to stabbing father before vehicle crash

17-year-old Barba Koroma admits to stabbing his father Barba Koroma, 62, before vehicle crash, police say. The teen remains on no-bail status.

BOWIE, Md. — A judge ordered a mental evaluation for a 17-year-old boy accused of stabbing his father during a dispute while driving in Bowie, Md. on July 26.

Police responded around 4:30 p.m. to Allen Pond Park for a report of a domestic incident involving a crash. When they got there, officers said they found an SUV that had crashed into a fence.

Nearby, police found the victim in a wooded area on the ground with trauma to the body.

The victim, later identified as Barba Koroma, 62, was pronounced dead, police said.

"Police were on the scene and they observed the blood trail toward the wood line and came upon the body,"  Prince George's County State's Attorney Aisha Braveboy said Monday during a press conference.

Officers also found the suspect, 17-year-old Barba Koroma -- the victim's son who shares the same name -- walking out of the wooded area.

He was taken to a hospital, where he was treated for minor injuries, before he was taken to the PGPD Homicide Unit for questioning.

"There appeared to have been something that occurred inside the vehicle between the father and son, which ultimately ended up with the vehicle they were both traveling in crashing," she explained.

The son admitted to stabbing the father right before the crash, police said. After the crash, the son took his father from the vehicle and dragged him into the nearby wooded area, police said.

Barba Koroma, 17, was charged as an adult with first- and second-degree murder on Saturday, police said. On Monday, Prince George's County State's Attorney Aisha Braveboy said the teen remains in custody on a no-bond status.

"A district court judge determined that Barba Koroma should remain held without bond. She has ordered a mental health evaluation," Braveboy said.

The teen's next court appearance is on Aug. 29.
