HYATTSVILLE, Md. — The city of Hyattsville has launched a pilot program that offers free bilingual mental health services to children, youth and families in partnership with the Hope Center for Wellness.
City officials hope the program will help address mental health care among minority groups who may not have access to the necessary help.
Hyattsville Mayor Robert Croslin shared that “Hyattsville’s City Council and staff have been moved and concerned about the mental health challenges facing our children and teens. We are hopeful this new program will begin to offer a solution for families seeking lifesaving mental wellness resources.”
The initiative includes three programmatic pillars with free programs available to the public through June 2025. The programs include:
- Individual and Family Therapy: In-person and virtual therapy sessions are offered in English and Spanish for children ages 6-21 and their families. You must be a resident of the incorporated City of Hyattsville and demonstrate financial need to participate. Registration is open now; sessions will begin July 4.
- Expressive Arts Support Groups for Teens: Various art forms will be used to facilitate self-expression, emotional exploration, healing and personal growth. This program is open to middle and high school students who live or attend schools in the City of Hyattsville. Registration opens June 17; the first cohort will begin on June 25.
- Community Wellness Workshops: A series of experiential workshops will teach community members to recognize mental health symptoms and offer practical tools and strategies, including connecting community members to therapeutic support. Workshops are open to the general public. Sessions will be listed at hyattsville.org/calendar.
Under the banner “In Wellness We Thrive/ Con Bienestar Prosperamos” the pilot for this program is being supported by funds from the American Rescue Plan Act gifted to the city. Hyattsville officials say they hope by eliminating financial and linguistic barriers, it will allow families to receive health care previously inaccessible to them.
