HYATTSVILLE, Md. — A contractor doing work on a townhome in Hyattsville discovered a possible explosive device Tuesday afternoon. Police and firefighters responded to the neighborhood to make sure everyone is safe.

Hyattsville Police and the Prince George's County Fire Marshal responded to the home in the 5700 block of 31st Place just before 2 p.m. Police set up a perimeter around the house and evacuated the homeowner.

Those who live nearby were asked avoid the area while the investigation is underway. About an hour later, police said a fire marshal inspection revealed the item found was not a live device, and the area around the home was reopened.
