HAVRE DE GRACE, Md. (WUSA9) -- A Maryland highway worker was killed Thursday after police say a van left the roadway and struck the worker on I-95.

The victim has been identified as Michael Pearce, 59, of Abingdon, Md. Police say he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Around 1 p.m., police say a Ford van left the travel portion of the roadway and continued into the area between the right shoulder and MD 155 overpass. The van struck the right rear of a stopped dump truck before police say the van struck the victim.

The driver has been identified as Corey Ness, 54, of Spring Grove, Pa. Police say he was transported to a local hospital and was treated for injuries sustained during the crash.

Pearce was employed by the Maryland Transportation Authority as a Facilities Maintenance Technician. Police say his work crew was assigned to mow the grassy area along the John F. Kennedy Memorial Highway.

Other members of the mowing crew were present during the time of the crash, but police say they did not sustain any injuries.

The speed of the van at the time of the crash has not been determined and police say it is unknown why the van left the roadway.
