FREDERICK, Md. — Police in Frederick announced the arrest of a man on Tuesday who was wanted in connection to a 2022 homicide.
Hakeem Earnest Sampson, 27, of Washington D.C., was wanted in connection to the 2022 death of Michael Isaih Olaniyi, 26, of Montgomery Village.
Around 3:30 a.m. on July 23, 2022, an officer with the Frederick Police Department was patrolling the North Market Street area when they heard a gunshot in the 300 Block of North Market Street.
When the officer arrived at the scene of the shooting, they found Olaniyi suffering from a gunshot wound. Olaniyi was pronounced dead shortly after reaching an area hospital.
Detectives identified a vehicle being used by two suspects involved in the homicide to be a black Maserati Ghibli with a Virginia license plate. Detectives were then able to positively identify the owner of the Maserati as Benjamin Michael Johnson.
Evidence collected by detectives showed that Johnson had a firearm minutes before the homicide occurred, and it showed Johnson driving a second suspect, believed to be Sampson, to the victim.
On Dec. 12, 2022, an arrest warrant was issued for Johnson charging him with:
- Accessory after the fact to 1st degree murder
- Accessory after the fact to 2nd degree murder
- Possession of handgun on person
- Possession of handgun by convicted felon (2 charges)
Johnson was arrested on Dec. 22, 2022. He is currently awaiting trial.
On Monday, police put out a notice that Sampson was wanted in connection to the crime, and he was taken into custody on Tuesday morning.
