4 people hurt, including an infant, after crash involving a horse and buggy in Maryland

Deputies believe the horse unexpectedly reared and bucked, leading to a collision with a Toyota Tundra.

LOVEVILLE, Md. β€” Police are investigating a crash involving a horse and buggy and a pick-up truck in St. Mary's County.

It happened just before noon near the intersection of Route 5 and Pin Cushion Road in Loveville.

A spokesperson for St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office told WUSA9 four people were taken to the hospital, including an infant.

An initial investigation reveals that a juvenile was operating the horse and buggy, that was carrying three family members. The buggy was stopped at the intersection of Pin Cushion Road and Point Lookout Road when the horse unexpectedly reared and bucked. Investigators say this caused the buggy to pull onto Point Lookout Road, where it was subsequently hit by a 2021 Toyota Tundra heading south. All four people in the buggy were ejected, according to investigators.

Police say the juvenile driver of the buggy and one adult passenger sustained life-threatening injuries as a result of the crash. They were both rushed to an area hospital for treatment.

Another passenger was taken to MedStar St Mary’s Hospital for treatment, and an infant was transported to Children’s Hospital for precautionary reasons.

Investigators say the buggy was stationary at the intersection when the horse unexpectedly reared and bucked. The action caused the buggy to enter the intersection and was struck by the Tundra. The horse died, sheriff's deputies said.

Currently, police do not believe speed or alcohol to be contributing factors to this crash.

Anyone who may have witnessed the collision or any events leading up to the collision is asked to contact Corporal Dale Reppel at dale.reppel@stmaryscountymd.gov or by phone at 240-496-6694.

According to a Facebook post by the Mechanicsville Volunteer Fire Department, a medevac helicopter was requested, but unable to respond because of the weather.

A photo shared by the fire department showed extensive damage to the front of the pick-up truck and a lot of debris in the roadway.

Police say the horse died as a result of the collision.

The road where the crash happened was shut down for several hours as investigators worked to determine what happened.

There's no word yet on if anyone is facing charges.
