MONTGOMERY VILLAGE, Md. — A former Montgomery County teacher is facing multiple charges involving sexual acts with a minor, and now police are investigating whether she may have abused more students.
Detectives with the Montgomery County Department of Police started an investigation into allegations of sexual abuse on Oct. 5 after a man informed them of what happened. He said that he had engaged in sexual acts with 31-year-old Melissa Curtis, of Upper Marlboro, when he was 14 years old and in the eighth grade.
Through the investigation, detectives learned that the alleged abuse started in 2015 when Curtis was 22 years old. The abuse continued for several months while the victim was a student at Montgomery Village Middle School. Curtis was a teacher at the school at the time, and all of the actions of abuse happened within the county.
Court records show that the instances of abuse occurred inside a Montgomery County Public Schools classroom, in a vehicle, at the victim's home, and Curtis' mother's home, and other locations. Records also show that Curtis provided the boy with alcohol and marijuana.
A warrant for Curtis' arrest was obtained on Oct. 31, 2023, charging her on 15 counts including sexual abuse of a minor and multiple counts of third and fourth-degree sexual offenses, according to the police department. She turned herself in on Tuesday.
Police said that Curtis was a teacher in Montgomery County for around two years and also taught at Lakelands Park Middle School. Detectives with the department's Special Victims Investigations Division says they believe that there may be more victims and would like to speak to them. Potential victims are encouraged to call 240-773-5400.
