Firing of Md. town's first black police chief leads to turmoil

Former Pocomoke City Police Chief Kelvin Sewell

UNDATED (AP) - Residents of a small town on Maryland's Eastern Shore are venting their frustrations and concerns about the ouster of Pocomoke City's first black police chief.

Two pastors who support ousted Chief Kevin Sewell are scheduled to address the City Council on Monday evening, followed by comments from other residents.

Officials deny Sewell's claim that he was dismissed for refusing demands that he fire two black officers who filed complaints saying they had been treated unfairly. But officials say they their ability to address the issue publicly is limited because of pending litigation and personnel rules.

A lawyer who represents all three men says the trouble began when one of them filed a complaint alleging that he was subjected to racial harassment while serving on a multiagency criminal enforcement team.
