FREDERICK COUNTY, Md. — Fire crews battled a fire in Frederick County, Maryland early Sunday morning.

Fire officials said the call came in around 7 a.m. to a reported dwelling fire near 10 E Main Street in Burkittsville. The initial call came in with fire showing thorough the roof, officials said.

Responding units called for a Tanker Task Force, Fire Task Force and Rapid Intervention Dispatch. When crews got there, they found the U.S. Post Office and a neighboring house fully involved.

Officials said it took 75 officials and around 90 minutes for the fire to be under control. Several people who lived in the residential structure were home at the time of the fire and self-evacuated.

One person was taken to the hospital to be evaluated, and one firefighter was taken to Meritus after falling 20 feet from a ladder, according to Deputy Chief Leatherman.

The home is a nearly 150-year-old historic house. Deputy Chief Leatherman said it was converted into three apartments. Neighbors said their dogs' barking alerted them to the danger.

Ten people were displaced and are being helped by the American Red Cross.

On Dec. 25, a house fire in Mount Airy, Maryland left four adults and two children without a home on Christmas, Frederick County fire officials said.

The two-alarm fire was reported around 10:53 a.m. on Christmas Day, authorities said. When crews got to the home, they noticed flames coming from the single-family house located at 6212 Woodville Road.

It took about 50 firefighters from Frederick County, Carroll County, Montgomery County, and Howard County to knock out the flames in an hour upon initial arrival, officials said.

One firefighter was injured and taken to the hospital as a result of the fire, officials said.

The American Red Cross was called to the scene to assist the displaced residents, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
