Over the midterm elections, Maryland voted to legalize recreational marijuana, joining 19 states including Virginia and Washington, D.C.
The new change will go into effect beginning in July 2023, and those looking to indulge will have to be over the age of 21.
The Maryland State Legislature is now tasked with passing laws surrounding marijuana’s use, distribution, regulation and taxation across the state. The amendment, called Question 4 on the Maryland ballot, was initially introduced as House Bill 1 on Jan. 12 by Delegate Luke Clippinger (D) of Baltimore City.
More than 850,000 people voted in favor of adding the constitutional amendment; a total of more than 65%.
On July 1, 2023, marijuana will become completely legal to use recreationally, just not in public. Possession will be limited to 1.5 ounces.
It also reduces some of the penalties for possession over that amount, and possession with intent to distribute. Lastly, it gives those who were previously convicted, a way to petition for expungement.
