Dog rescued from storm drain in Montgomery County

It's not clear how the pup ended up trapped in the drain.

GAITHERSBURG, Md. — Someone's furry friend got into a tight spot in Montgomery County on Thursday. A dog got stuck in a storm drain, and emergency crews had to work together to get the pup to safety.

Crews were called to the intersection of Washington Grove Lane and Center Street in Gaithersburg Thursday morning. That's near Washington Grove United Methodist Church. Another dog on a walk noticed the trapped dog in the drain, and that dog's owner contacted authorities.

Animal control officers and firefighters worked together to remove the storm grates and scare the dog out of the pipe. A Montgomery County firefighter was waiting at the other end to safely capture the dog.

Pete Piringer, spokesperson for Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services, posted images and video of the rescue effort on social media.

It is not clear how the dog ended up in the drain, or if the dog belongs to somebody. We are just happy they are safe.
