DISTRICT HEIGHTS, Md. (WUSA) – District Heights Mayor James L. Walls died inside his home Thursday, according to District Heights police.
His cause of death is unknown at this time, but, preliminarily, police say there are no signs of foul play.
Walls was serving his third term as mayor after he was re-elected on May 5, 2014. The 39-year-old was the youngest person in the city’s history to be elected as a Mayor and the youngest person to ever serve as Vice Mayor and City Commissioner.
Sources tell WUSA9 the mayor was known to have some health issues, but the extent of those issues is unclear.
Flags are flying at half-staff at city hall in tribute to Walls.
Representatives for Governor Larry Hogan and Prince George's County Executive Rushern Baker told WUSA9 the two were shocked by the news and said Walls devotion to public service will be missed.
