Cyclist dies after Sunday hit and run in Wheaton-Glenmont

Police release a photo of a similar vehicle in hopes of finding the driver.

WHEATON-GLENMONT, Md. — A 19-year-old cyclist is dead and police are searching for a driver after a crash in Montgomery County Sunday night.

William Villavicencio died Friday in a hospital after being hit by a car on Georgia Avenue in the Wheaton-Glenmont area, according to Montgomery County Police (MCPD).

On Friday, Villavicencio's shattered family demanded justice and investigators released a photo of a vehicle similar to the one they believe may be involved.

Montgomery County police believe the vehicle is a dark red or maroon Honda Accord from between 2003 and 2007 with damage to the right front bumper and a missing mirror.

"In this particular instance, there is a right-side view mirror that was left behind," said Montgomery County Police Assistant Chief Mark Yamada.

"The problem oftentimes in these cases is that the vehicle might not be local," Yamada added. "This vehicle could be anywhere."

“He was a 19-year-old with his whole life ahead of him," said Rev. Paula Moutsos of Pathways Baptist Church in Gaithersburg who said she’d known Villavicencio most of his life.

Moutsos said Villavicencio was coming home from work when he was struck.

We are devastated and heartbroken for the family. We would ask for justice,” Moutsos said with family members in tears looking on.

So far in 2022, at least four cyclists have been killed in Montgomery County and at least 8 pedestrians have died, according to Montgomery County police statistics.
