Charles Co. Sheriff's officer suspended, charged with rape and misconduct in office

Ten months after the department became aware of the allegations, Bryan Antwain Keys, Jr. was arrested after an administrative investigation.

CHARLES COUNTY, Md. — A Charles County Sheriff's officer was indicted on several charges, including second-degree rape, and released by a judge Monday on the condition he wears an electronic monitoring device.

According to a release from the Charles County Sheriff's Office (CCSO), 36-year-old Bryan Antwain Keys, Jr. faces charges of second-degree rape, solicitation of prostitution, and misconduct in office.

CCSO claims the department become aware of the allegations in January 2022 and relieved Keys, a seven-year veteran of the department, of his duties.

"In accordance with Agency policy, the CCSO’s Office of Professional Responsibility conducted an administrative investigation and the Criminal Investigations Division began working with the Charles County State’s Attorney’s Office to investigate," CCSO says in a release.

The department says Keys was suspended without pay until his court hearing, in accordance with policy.

Keys was arrested on Friday. A judge released Keys from the Charles County Detention Center as long as he meets the requirements for electronic monitoring.

“This officer’s actions are contrary to the values and the professionalism of the Agency," said Major Ronald Farrell, Assistant Sheriff of Administration. "I want to make our community aware of this indictment and reassure them that we investigated these allegations to the fullest extent.”
