LAUREL, Md. — A thief who jumped in a car at a gas station in Laurel, Maryland Saturday night sped off with two children in the backseat, Prince George's County Police said.

The incident happened around 8:30 p.m. in the 13700 block of Baltimore Avenue.

The driver had pulled up to the gas pump and exited while leaving the vehicle running. That's when a thief seized the opportunity to dash into the car, speeding off - despite two young children sitting in the back, according to police.

After just a block, the thief gave up the car and ran away, leaving the kids and the vehicle. Both children were soon found safe.

Police have not yet confirmed their ages or genders, or released any identifying information about the driver or a suspect.
