Ballot disaster: Prince George's Co. explains why some voters waited in line for hours

Prince George's County Elections Administrator Alisha Alexander said it's because they only supplied those locations with 60 to 70 percent of the ballots, based off of those that voted in the presidential election two years ago.

PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, Md. -- Voters at some polling places in Prince George's County, Maryland waited in line for several hours on Tuesday after the location ran out of paper ballots.

Prince George's County Elections Administrator Alisha Alexander said it's because they only supplied those locations with 60 to 70 percent of the ballots, based off of those that voted in the presidential election two years ago.

"When we realized it was an issue, it was in the middle of rush hour," Alexander said.

She added that less than 5 percent of polling locations in Prince George's County were dangerously low on ballots or completely ran out.

The board of elections confirmed at least four locations in Prince George's County ran out of paper ballots. The first location we reported was at a community center in Upper Marlboro, Md. At least 300 people were waiting in line for more than two hours.

The second location was Brandywine Elementary School. People in line waited more than five hours to vote. The other two locations are not known at this time.

Going forward, Alexander said they plan to provide each polling location with 100 percent of the ballots and will not base it off of previous voter turnout.

She also expressed that board takes voting very seriously.

"I can't thank the voters enough for their patience, the majority in line opted to stay in line,” Alexander said.
