POTOMAC, Md. — Montgomery County officials are investigating a playground fire believed to be arson.
On Tuesday, a fire set at Greenbriar Local Park on Glen Road in Potomac around 10 p.m. caused extensive damage. The Maryland-National Capital Park Police, Montgomery Parks and Montgomery County Fire & Rescue are asking for the public's help in determining what happened.
“We put a lot of effort into creating a safe and enjoyable space for the community, and it’s so sad to see it destroyed,” said Miti Figueredo, Montgomery Parks director. “Now, instead of moving forward with other projects, we have to prioritize replacing what was lost. It’s a setback for the whole community.”
The estimated damages were $1 million.
The playground is closed until further notice, county officials said.
Greenbriar Local Park was renovated in 2016, with two new playgrounds added. The tot playground, geared to children ages 2-5, was not damaged in the fire and is still open.
Anyone with information is asked to call the arson tipline at 240-777-2263.
