Police: 3 people wanted for the armed robbery of Montgomery County restaurant

One of the victims in the case was taken to a local hospital to be treated for injuries, and they are expected to recover.

SILVER SPRING, Md. — An Ethiopian restaurant was robbed early Thursday morning in Silver Spring, sparking an investigation into what happened and a search for the people responsible. 

The Montgomery County Department of Police confirmed to WUSA9 that they responded around 12:15 a.m. to Shalla Ethiopian Restaurant on Sligo Avenue after a report of an armed robbery. Through an initial investigation, they were able to determine that there were three men wearing masks -- two of whom were armed -- who entered the restaurant and stole property from the victims. The alleged suspects then fled the scene.

One restaurant manager told WUSA9 at least 20 people and an employee were robbed, and one person was hit with the butt of what may have been a shotgun. They were taken to a local hospital to be treated for injuries, and they are expected to recover. 

Employees who did not want to be named for their own safety said the robbers were paying particular attention to people wearing gold jewelry. 

"It seems as though it wasn't just breaking in and taking, it was to scare people," said nearby business owner, Mary Paulino. "We're all small businesses and we all get along really well." 

Paulino said she believes the community has been violated. 

Police said no one is currently in custody in connection to the crime. Thursday evening MCPD released some preliminary information about who they are searching for. The first man was described as heavy-set, wearing a black BMW hooded sweatshirt with black sweatpants and carrying a shotgun, The second man was wearing all black clothing, a black jacket and carrying a long rifle. The third was wearing a black jacket, white sweatshirt, black pants and a white facemask. He was carrying a red bag, but not weapon was visible.
