MARYLAND, USA — In a highly anticipated race, April McClain Delaney emerged victorious in Maryland’s 6th District congressional race, defeating Republican challenger Neil Parrott, AP projected Saturday.
The Democratic candidate previously served as an official in the U.S. Department of Commerce under President Joe Biden.
McClain Delaney made accessible health care central to her campaign, voicing support for expanding coverage to all Americans.
“April believes that healthcare coverage should be a right and not a privilege,” her campaign website says. “Obamacare was a major step forward that she will defend vehemently, but our goal should be universal healthcare – where every American has a right to healthcare.”
Education was also a significant focus of McClain Delaney’s campaign, choosing to highlight the importance of investing in public schools and making college more affordable.
Environmental protection emerged as another critical issue, with a call for sustainable policies to address climate change and promote renewable energy sources. McClain Delaney also advocated for social justice reforms within the criminal justice system and emphasized the necessity of equitable economic opportunities for all.
Born in Idaho, McClain Delaney now lives in Potomac. April McClain Delaney’s husband, John Delaney, represented the 6th district in Congress as a Democrat from 2013 to 2019, leaving office to launch an unsuccessful presidential bid in 2020.
Democratic Rep. David Trone currently represents Maryland’s 6th district. In 2023, Trone launched his campaign for U.S. Senate to replace Democrat Ben Cardin. In May, Trone lost the Democratic primary to Prince George’s Executive Angela Alsobrooks.
McClain Delaney will take over for Rep. Trone in January.
