Keep neighbors safe this winter by adopting a fire hydrant

Montgomery County firefighters ask those who are willing an able to keep hydrants clear of snow in case of an emergency.

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. — It's only a matter of time before snow falls in the D.C. region. Firefighters in Montgomery County want neighbors to stay safe in case of an emergency. That's why the Montgomery County Fire Department is reminding residents of its Adopt a Fire Hydrant program.

The fire department asks those who are willing and able to "adopt" a fire hydrant and keep it clear of snow and ice during winter weather. You can access this map to find a fire hydrant near you

Pete Piringer, Public Information Officer with Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services, said those who shovel should clear snow and ice from the hydrant itself, as well as clear a wide enough perimeter around the fire hydrant to allow firefighters to work. Piringer said that's about a three-foot perimeter. Those who adopt a hydrant should also clear a path from the hydrant to the street.

Keeping snow off of hydrants and from space around hydrants allows fire crews to work quickly should an emergency arise.
