LEONARDTOWN, Md. — Five high school students are facing charges after deputies say they attacked a classmate earlier this month.

According to the St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office, the attack happened at Chopticon High School on Monday, March 4.

Investigators say the five students jumped another student in a school hallway. During the assault, the sheriff's office says one suspect's actions had the potential to cause severe and serious life-threatening injury to the victim.

That student, only identified as a juvenile male, is being charged as an adult with first-degree and second-degree assault.

The other four students involved in the attack have been charged as juveniles with second-degree assault.

The motive behind the attack has not been released.
