MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. — A 25-year-old father is facing charges after police say his 5-month-old was found with severe trauma after being left in his care.

According to the Montgomery County Police Special Victims Investigations Division (SVID)-Child Abuse and Sex Assault Unit, Oliver Hernandez Caballero of Damascus has been charged with two counts of first-degree child abuse.

Investigators allege that on Thursday, December 28, 2023, Hernandez Caballero was at home alone with his infant. Around 9 p.m. the 5-month-old was having problems breathing and eating and was taken to Shady Grove Hospital.

The infant was transferred to the Children’s National Medical Center as a result of severe and unexplained injuries to the head and body. Child Protective Services (CPS) then notified detectives from the SVID-Child Abuse and Sex Assault Unit.

Detectives say evidence and information points to  Hernandez Caballero abusing the infant, resulting in the serious injuries.

Hernandez Caballero was arrested on Monday and taken to the Montgomery County Central Processing Unit where he is being held without bond.
