COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Three new students were diagnosed with adenovirus on the University of Maryland’s campus, the university confirmed on Monday.
In a letter home to students, they said all three students were diagnosed over the Thanksgiving break and none required hospitalization.
A UMD student passed away last Monday after being diagnosed with adenovirus. The illness had a viral outbreak in New Jersey in November, killing 11 people.
According to the University's Health Center, Adenovirus is associated with the common cold with symptoms such as cough, fevers, congestion and sore throats.
On Monday, the University wrote that a majority of the strains are not dangerous to the general population and they urge students to follow health protocols, such as washing their hands and getting flu shots.
