Locals share #ShutdownStories as government shutdown rolls on to 5th day

The hashtag has trended several times on social media sites like Twitter.

People all across the country are sharing their "Shutdown Stories" on social media as the partial government shutdown prepares to enter its fifth day.

The shutdown began after President Donald Trump failed to persuade Congress to secure funding for his border wall between the United States and Mexico. The President had previously said he would refuse to sign any spending plan put forth by lawmakers that did not include money for the project.

As a result, 800,000 federal workers have either been furloughed or forced to work without pay.

On Twitter, users have been writing about their personal experiences during the shutdown using the hashtag "#ShutdownStories".

An Alexandria man tweeted that he had just moved to the D.C. area to take a job with the federal government. However, after spending much of his savings during the move, he is now worried he might not get paid.

Another poster from Virginia wrote that he had a second interview lined up for a government job this week, but now it is doubtful if the interview will ever take place.

Over the last two days, the "Shutdown Stories" hashtag has trended several times on Twitter. However, not everyone with a shutdown story is connected directly to the federal government.

John Shaw, of Aberdeen, Washington, visited Washington, D.C. with his family to conduct research for a Coast Guard and maritime museum at the National Archives. However, that work has been put on hold.

The National Archives is temporarily closed due to the shutdown.

"We joked about it quite sometime ago," Shaw said. "'What happens if we get shut down?' We didn't think that would happen again, but it's unfortunate we're going through this at this time."
