WASHINGTON -- A local organization that is on a mission to end homelessness across the District is hosting an event Sunday that will keep the homeless warm this winter.
Friendship Place is hosting its 8th Annual Winter Warmth event at the Washington Hebrew Congregation in NW tomorrow.
Those who participate will have the chance to shop for free winter clothing items. Free haircuts and hot meals will also be available for those in need.
"We create a really nice atmosphere, " said Lynn Sachs, one of the lead organizers. "We have volunteers of all ages, including high school kids which is really terrific."
Friendship Place serves 3,600 people who are homeless or at risk of being homeless a year. The organization helps them find housing, employment and connecting them to services that help them maintain their housing.
"We'd like to think that we give hope and we do so with the help of people throughout the community," said Christopher Rutledge, the Chief Development Officer. He encourages people to get involved.
On WUSA9's Saturday morning show, he showed viewers a black parka that turns into a sleeping bag. The organization received $20,000 worth of "empower coats" which is another name for that parka.
If you or someone you know would like to participate in the Winter Warmth event, the church is located at 3935 Macomb St NW, Washington, DC 20016.
The event is from 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
There will be free shuttle service from Tenleytocwn Metro/Library from 2:15 - 4:45 p.m.
From Tenleytown red line station, take any southbound 30 bus (31/32/33) or take the 96/X3 bus to Newark & Wisconsin Ave.
