Local man's Darth Vader collection spans thousands of items

WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- For decades, Bill McBride has collected Star Wars memorabilia, and he's done a good job. To date, he said he has more than 63,000 items in his personal collection; all of them related to one character: Darth Vader.

"I immediately feel in love with the character in 1977. I was a little guy. I went to go see it in the theater and it was just something about the character. He absolutely resonates with me. He became my absolute favorite," McBride explained.

McBride said he kept all of his childhood toys, and after college started collecting items in earnest.

Last year, he stared cataloging them for the Guiness Book of World Records.

Some of the items are displayed at his home in suburban Washington, D.C., but McBride said he only displays a fraction of it.

"It's virtually impossible to display all of it," McBride said. "This is I think a grand total of 1/25th of my total collection."

On May 4th, a day known as a Star Wars Day, the collection seems extra special.

Even though McBride considers everyday a Star Wars Day, on May 4th he opened his home exclusively to WUSA9.
