Lighting causes 3 fires in Montgomery County

Montgomery County firefighters say lighting is to blame for at least three house fires in the county Wednesday night.
2-Alarm House Fire in Md.

ROCKVILLE, Md. (WUSA9) -- Montgomery County firefighters say lighting is to blame for at least three house fires in the county Wednesday night.

The worst of the first happened at a townhouse at 1637 Yale Place in Rockville.

Around 75 firefighters were on the scene of the two-alarm fire. Two firefighters were treated for minor injuries after part of the ceiling fell on them.

The fire started in a vacant townhome and spread to an adjoining unit. Officials say the damage was greater than $100 thousand and 16 people have been displaced.

The second fire was at a large single family home at 12820 River Road in Potomac. No injuries were reported. Officials say a lightning strike resulted in a fire in the basement and utility room. The damage is estimated at $100 thousand.

The third fire was at 10212 Sundance Court off of Democracy Lane in Rockville.
